An important event during the Festival will be a series of Jewish films dedicated to the memory
of Master Gustaw Holoubek (85)
, who died on the 6th of March 2008 - films with his unforgettable roles and interpretations.

The response of the Communist regime was to find a scapegoat, guilty of any social disturbances. It became the Polish Jews, who were forced to leave the country in March 1968. The 40th anniversary of these events shall be another essential element of our Festival programme.
| An outstanding theatre and film actor as well as director, Gustaw Holoubek was born on the 21st of April 1923 in Cracow. He made his debut as Charys in the play Odysseus at the Feaks in the Old Theatre. He acted in the theatres of Cracow, Katowice, Warsaw. He played over 300 hundred film and theatre roles. He was a most versatile actor: he could play a western character, as in the film The Law and the Fist, and the subtle Professor Tutka, as well as the unyielding king Władysław Jagiełła or Shakespeares Richard II. Every one of his roles was masterfully played, and in every one he was equally convincing. |  |
In the years 1972-1982 he was director of the Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw; the introduction of martial law was followed by his dismissal. After the 13th of December 1981 (Martial Law in PL) he resigned his parliamentary seat; in the years 1989-1991 he sat in the Senate, where he represented the faction of President Lech Walesa. He was Professor of the Theatre Academy in Warsaw, in 1996 he became director of the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw.
He was called an intellectual actor`, a distanced one. According to one of the opinions, he belongs to the race of actors who only ever play themselves, and whom we can never have had enough of.
His roles after the move from Katowice to Warsaw (1958) became part of the legend of the Polish theatre: the judge in Bettis Corrupti on in the Palace of Justice, Goetz in Sartres The Devil and the Good Lord, Oedipus, Platonov, Przełęcki.

In the seventies, according to the milieu`s wish, he became director of the Dramatic Theatre (1972-83), head of SPATiF for 11 years (Polish Theatre and Film Actors Association), as well as Member of Parliament. In 1981 Polish Culture Congress was taking place in his theatre; his Sejm speech defending Solidarity during martial law will come down in history. Simultaneously he played his great roles in Shakespeares Hamlet, in Slaughterhouse and By Foot by Sławomir Mrożek; I, Michael from Montaigne by Józef Hen and Operetta by Witold Gombrowicz.
In the cinema he remained faithful to especially two directors: Tadeusz Konwicki and Wojciech Jerzy Has, beginning with the memorable film Loop (1958). He also played the leading parts in Goodbyes, The Hourglass Sanatorium or Napoleon and Mary. He was the unforgettable Professor Tutka in the television adaptation of a well-known cycle of short stories by Jerzy Szaniawski, as well as the mathematician and philosopher Don Pedro Velasquez in The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (1964).
He published several books, among others "Memories from the Oblivion".
He was a faithful supporter of the football club Cracovia.
For his activity as actor and director he was awarded with about 53 prizes. He was also honoured with the Knights Cross of the Order of Poland Reborn. The President of Poland honoured him posthumously with the greatest order the Order of the White Eagle for the outstanding achievements in the artistic and didactic work.
Our Festival joins in the appeal to name the Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw after Master Gustaw Holoubek. We would also like to call for placing the Masters bust in the theatre foyer.
